Preparing for your Journey to Uganda
- Passport: Make sure that your passport is valid and does not
expire during your stay in Uganda.
- Visa: A visa is required for you to enter Uganda from most nations
such as USA, UK, Ireland and EU Nations. Do a web-search for the
Ugandan Embassy in your country and look at how visas are issued and find
the applications needed. A single entry visa for 90 days is 50 dollars
and a multi-entry good for 6 months is 90 dollars. In most countries
you can use the local post to overnight it to the embassy, have a paid
return envelope and include a money order as specified by embassy, otherwise
you need to visit in person.
- Immunisations: It is best to contact a travel clinic in your place
of residence. You need a clinic that will issue an International
Health Certificate since that is required with your Yellow Fever
immunisation. It is also recommended that you receive a Tetanus
update, Polio. Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Menningitis. All this should
be discussed with your travel clinic about 8 weeks before departure.
- Malaria Prevention: While receiving your immunisations check with
the doctor at the Travel Clinic about malaria prevention. For Uganda
there are basically three anti-malarial drugs that are recommended.
There is Mefloquine also referred to as Larium. There are some side
effects such as bad and violent dreams, depression, dizziness, heart
irregularities and more. There is Malarone that is new and has little
side effects, but it costs about 5 dollars per pill. Lastly there is
the antibiotic Doxycycline. It is relative inexpensive and does not
have major side effects. One does become more sun-sensitive.
- Travellers Diarrhoea: Get a prescription of Ciprofloxacin with
about 3 to 4 treatments, also take some over the counter immodium with you.
- Insect Repellant: Buy a few bottles to take along and wear during
the evening and night times.
- Sun Protection: Sunglasses and sunscreen is needed for most, a
broad hat would also be quite helpful.
